I think I learned that technique from a coffee table herb book years ago but then found it as part of folk wisdom and in lots of gardening books. There's good science behind it! :-) And marigolds are so cheerful. :-)

Polly, are you in Georgia or Florida? I know you're near the border of those states, aren't you? Granddaddy was from Georgia but much further north (but still south of Atlanta). I'll bet your grandfather and my grandfather learned from the same pool. (Yes, that's a badly mixed metaphor.)

As I started to read about the weeds, I was going to say "newspapers with leaves or straw (not hay, which has seeds in it) on top." Great minds think alike? I pull my weeds first, though, if they are getting out of control. You won't kill them at this point, but you can slow them down.

Have you ever used corn meal to stop weeds?

This post has just dug up memories of my own grandparents. Until I read this, I had forgotten how my grandpa used to strip the leaves and bury the plants...how neat! It almost feels like remembering a dream I couldn't quite recall until now.
My tomatoes have been outside in the ground for several weeks now, and we have a few little green babies already. My problem now is that the new garden is still recovering from being a roaming pen, and weeds are trying to take over. I am weeding just about every night. Any suggestions?
I really should have put newspapers down, but I didn't.
